Therapy

Different people, at different stages of life will have different problems and are best helped by an approach that takes all this into account. My training allows me a breadth of approach that I believe can help most people. Having said that, research suggests that the quality of relationship between client and therapist is the best indicator of therapeutic success.

I am an experienced therapist used to working with people from a wide diversity and with a range of mental health problems. My experience for over a decade was primarily as a university counsellor working with young people and members of staff. However, I have also worked for GP practices and for charities.

I am accredited in Cognitive Analytic Therapy (CAT) which is particularly relevant if you find that you recognise patterns in your relationships which leave you feeling dissatisfied, unhappy or trapped in ever-repeating cycles.

I am also trained in Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR), a therapy particularly helpful in resolving past trauma and its impact on how we see ourselves and on our resilience to cope with life’s stresses.

My fundamental training is in the person-centred approach, which helps me to see the individual rather than the problem they are experiencing and help them to realize their potential for a more fulfilling life.

Clinical Supervision

My core training is in humanistic psychology and I endeavour to provide a non-threatening and safe space for supervisees to explore fully their relationships both with their clients but also with me as supervisor. As relational beings, our lives will be influenced by personal and professional relationships - it is not possible, nor desirable in my view, to attempt to leave significant events 'outside the supervision space'. At the same time supervision is not counselling and agreeing boundaries is an important element of the contract.

My own work draws on three main disciplines and I bring these to supervision. My experience in working in higher education as well as in the private and voluntary sectors is broad enough to be valuable to the therapists I supervise. My aim is to provide supervisees with the resources they need whether these are to do with therapeutic skills, self-care and resilience or the adherence to professional and ethical standards.

Please note that I do not supervise EMDR therapy.
